Get Yourself Prepared for the Phone Interview!

When I applied for my Disney College Program in 2019, the world was normal and the phone interview was still around. This final part of the interview process is the most nerve wracking, and yet the most anticipated, important step. Should the phone interview return post-covid, I'm going to share with you my tips for the phone interview.

Get Ready!

Throughout the whole week of my interview, I spent my days preparing. My voice, my vocabulary, my answers to any possible questions, and my steady breathing. I wanted to make sure this was perfect. Once I selected my date, I knew that I would make sure I was ready.

First things first, I found an article of all the questions your Disney recruiter could ask you. I wrote all of them into a word document, and answered them. This document was helpful to have nearby during my call, so I could refresh my memory should the question arise.

I also watched multiple DCP phone interview Youtube videos beforehand, and many told me to write down my recruiters name. It's always good to keep a notecard with you so you can write it down as soon as they say it, and that way you can refer back to them so it feels more personable to the both of you. Disney is all about communication and customer service, so it's good to show that from day one.

On the morning of my interview, I made sure I was up early, ready for the day, ate a good breakfast, and had everything I needed. I put on a cute outfit, and a pair of mickey ears, to get into the good spirit. I was nervous, but so ready.

I laid everything out on the floor and wall in front of me, including the document I had with all the questions, my application, and all the notecards of my preferred roles and questions/answers they could ask me for those as well. Then it was time for the call.

The Call

The recruiter can call you up to 5 minutes before or 5 minutes after your confirmed time, so be ready for that. When I answered the call, I said “Hi, This is Sawyer,” so they knew right away they had the right number. Your recruiter will introduce themselves, and confirm with you that it is a good time for your interview, always say yes. You want to be in a quiet, uninterrupted environment, and you should have had enough time to prepare that. I don't see any reason as to why you would say no to their question.

Throughout the interview, make sure to listen with intent, and take a second to form your answers before blurting out the first thing to come to mind. Hesitation doesn't always mean you don't know the answer, it could also mean you're just taking a second to process, and that's okay. When you are trying to process your answer, don't flip through papers you may have in front of you. This will be audible, and not good for the interview.

Affirmation

Always go through everything you do with confidence. You're going to do amazing, and there will be opportunity after opportunity. Remind yourself of your goals, and you will do just fine! I wish you the best of luck!
